Fund Raiser-End the Silence Stop Domestic Violence

"HeathersVoice.org", a non-profit organization which provides assistance and educational programs to victims of domestic violence, their families, and at-risk youth will host a multi-act concert June 4, 2011, at the Earl Smith Strand Theater in historic Marietta.

Doors open at 6:00pm and the event will feature musical performances by Reverend Hylton and the Heads, The Wayward Hounds, the Reese Boyd Project, and several special guests including Lindsay Knight (Heather’s youngest cousin).

Saturday, April 23rd we will start our day going out to bring food to the people who call the bridges "home". It is not an easy thing to do, but we will be there with friends and family to help those in need. Afterward, we will head over to the shelter and start making plans for Phase 2 for the 7 Bridges to Recovery shelter. The amount of support we are receiving is wonderful and inspiring.

Lindsay's Voice- Words From Heather's Cousin

She wasn’t just some story in the paper. She was a friend, a cousin, a grandchild, a daughter, a mother. She was someone’s hero, savior, and comfort when their own ends seemed to fray. She wasn’t just front page news. She was a dreamer. Like the John Lennon song. The smallest pieces of her had ambition. She knew what fear was but chose to ignore it and she was adored all her life. People always said she looked like she walked right out of a magazine but her beauty rooted so much deeper than that.

Now that she’s gone the world seems to turn a little bit slower, the sun seems a little bit farther out in the sky, and flowers seem to wilt a little bit faster. I feel bad for these faces that never got to know hers. I feel bad for these people who never got to feel her smile. Because that’s what kind of person she was. A person who made you feel. The kind of person everyone wanted to be around.

I’ve heard a quote it went something like this: “People always get what they deserve.” How false could that be. The world wasn’t ready for Heather to be taken away.

So much planning in such a short time has left us all exhausted! The launch party at Kennesaw State University on March 22, 2011 was a wonderful success on so many levels.

With all good intentions, we had planned to post an update here just after the launch, so we apologize for the delay. But, the wait was worth it.

A Grieving Mother Finds Peace

"Forever Heather Quilt"

The "Forever Heather Quilt Project" was completed on February 25, 2011, just three days after what would have been Heather's 24th birthday. 

The following is a note from Heather's mother, Linda Kwiate: 

"When I decided to make the quilt I started looking through pictures of my Heather, but the fear gripped me every time. "Forever Heather" Project Begins The Week of Heather's 24th Birthday

The "Forever Heather" Quilt is a great project for Heather's family. Heather's maternal grandmother and many aunts are all together this week showing their love and support for Heather's mother, Linda by making a quilt in memory of Heather.

Some of these ladies traveled across the country to spend  time with her sharing memories while they make a quilt named "Forever Heather".Today is Heather's birthday and it is comforting to know that Linda, and all of our aunts are together on this difficult day.

This is the eve of what should have been the 24th birthday of Heather Jeannine Kwiate, who was killed less than a week after her birthday in 2010. Since we are choosing to celebrate her life through the Foundation, we will not be posting the details surrounding her death at this time, other than to say she was a victim of domestic violence.

Team Work In Action

Heather's Voice members were involved with the "Sam's Club Environmental Sustainability" project at the largest shelter in the Atlanta area,7 Bridges To Recovery.

From February 11-12, 2011, Heather's Voice members joined the Kennesaw State Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) team and completed phase one of the project.The focus of the project was to help the shelter become more energy efficient. We began by raising the funds needed to change out over 40 light fixtures and to buy weather proofing for doors and windows.

The improvement was immediately realized by the 106 people who reside at the shelter. The projection is that the shelter will save 25% on their energy bills.

Heather's Voice is providing numerous opportunities for you to become involved in helping victims of abuse. Keep in mind, although the ultimate victim is the one who has lost their life, there are still a lot of children left behind that are also victims.There are survivors living in shelters or on the streets, and there are families that have to find a way to cope.

Considering all of the people who are affected by domestic abuse, there are no reasons for you to not be more involved. We currently have members ranging in age from 14 to 68 years of age.

If you are struggling with ideas of what you can do, please join us at Heather's Voice and help us work on any or all of the many projects we have going on.We are always looking to team up with other organizations in order to provide assistance to the victims of abuse and we urge you to help us take a stand.

For this project, we teamed up with the staff from the shelter, the SIFE Team, Sam's Club Environmental Sustainability Program and The Home Depot, along with several generous individuals that donated time and funds.

As a society, we have been trained to "mind our own business" and to "not get involved". We have also learned that by having a charitable nature around the holidays that we have met our communal responsibilities.
Then we simply go about our privileged lives without looking back again until the following year. These antiquated ideas have to change.

According to a report from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence approximately 1.3 million women are victims of domestic abuse every year. Consider for a moment, by how much do you think that number would grow if we were to include abused men and children? The numbers are heart wrenching already.
