As a society, we have been trained to "mind our own business" and to "not get involved". We have also learned that by having a charitable nature around the holidays that we have met our communal responsibilities.
Then we simply go about our privileged lives without looking back again until the following year. These antiquated ideas have to change.
Victims are victims year round, and victims are people. More often than not, they need other people to help them learn positive, life changing habits. Victims of many types need donations of clothes and personal care items, but there is something more we need to give.
The giving of our time has more longevity than an old coat or a pair of jeans. This is something we learned by working with the residents of 7 Bridges to Recovery shelter in Atlanta, Georgia over the past few weeks.
Imagine how much you can change a person's life by bonding with them and really hear what they have to say. Consider the ways a person's life can completely change if you shared your most precious commodity, time.Use your voice to change a life, listen to another person's voice. See if the conversation brings comfort to a person that otherwise feels alone or lost.
What would happen to our world over time, if every person gave up an hour of watching television each night and visited with a child who has lost her parents to domestic abuse instead?Babies and children pick up on everything. Don't make the mistake of discounting their feelings because they are "too young to understand".
They may not understand particulars, but they know more than you think. These children need our help and through Heather's Voice, I propose a challenge to every person that reads this blog.
Make a commitment to give 100 hours of your time for a year (that's less than a half an hour a day!) to a shelter, an organization, a family member or other loved one who really needs help.It is much more difficult than dropping off a bag of clothes, but the hands on work is desperately needed.
If you need help finding a project to get into, please contact us and we can provide some options. Please post your commitment and let us know how you are progressing with the project(s).
